Under supervision, performs deckhand duties on the Staten Island Ferry in compliance with safety and security procedures. Responsible for general cleaning of the ferry and terminal areas; launching and manning rescue boats and life rafts; operating firefighting equipment; assisting in vessel-to-vessel transfers; operating boarding doors, gates and bridges; handling gangways and mooring lines; directing passenger and vehicle traffic; patrolling deck and assisting passengers; handling supplies, trash and freight; and participating in safety meetings and drills. Within six months must obtain a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential with Able Seaman and Lifeboatman endorsements and maintain a valid medical certificate. Must obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential within 30 days, pass medical and drug testing, and be able to work variable hours including nights and weekends.
